SUMMARY:Author Event: Sheryl Leă Ferguson & Susan Parker Lauer - Apples for Henry\, Sir William's Wild Wombat Walkabout and The Walking Stick
DESCRIPTION:Apples for Henry: An unlikely friendship between a dog and a horse ismade stronger with the gift of an apple. The book also takes the reader throughthe growth of an apple tree from blossom to tiny fruit to juicy treat. Inaddition to the delightful story\, a ladybug is hidden in each of thephotographs challenging young readers to practice their visual discriminationskills. \nSir William’s Wild Wombat Walkabout: Not every adventurer wearsboots—some have a bare nose and tough claws. William is no ordinary wombat witha little round belly. Was he content to graze on Maria Island after beingraised on the sunny shores of Maria Island? Not William\, he was restless. Hedecided to head out on a “walkabout” to the rugged mountains of Tasmania.Listening to his Mum’s bedtime stories gave him guidance\, but little didWilliam know what awaited him on his adventure. From listening to the pigsqueals of the curious Cape Barren Geese to surviving a rough ride as a ferrystowaway\, William’s adventure is filled with strange sights\, explorations andunlikely new friends. He’s a young explorer whose spirit is as big as hisserious craving for Silver Tussock grass. As the road grows long\, this rotundtraveler must rely on his wits and have the courage of a lion—or at least avery fearless marsupial. What will it take for William to find his ultimatedestination? Will William find a new ‘wisdom’ at Cradle Mountain? Is the truewisdom found in the courage it took to begin on his adventure? Or will he findout that the greatest wisdom of all was the courage it took to leave home?Follow William along on his inspiring journey across the sea and the Land DownUnder to discover where true wisdom really hides. \nThe Walking Stick: The Walking Stick is more than a storyabout finding purpose. In addition to the charming story\, young readers arechallenged to expand their visual discrimination skills by searching to find aladybug hidden in each of the charming photographs. It also highlights featuresof the four seasons and introduces young readers to different types of treesand forest animals while encouraging them to discover more with interestingfacts on each page and an illustrated glossary. \nSusanParker Lauer: Susan Parker Lauer is a retiredkindergarten teacher and the mother of three grown daughters. She and herhusband live near Winchester\, VA. Her hobbies include hiking\, genealogicalresearch and laughing with friends. \nSherylLeă Ferguson: Trading a pair of combat boots for hikingboots\, Sheryl Leă Ferguson loves a good adventure. A United States Marine Corpsveteran\, she served four years in the Corps before earning her Master’s Degreein Strategic Leadership. She finds inspiration from her love of hiking\,photography and traveling. Sheryl lives in Virginia with her husband. She loveshiking\, reading\, gardening and photography. Her purpose in life is to bringbeauty to the world. She hopes that by reading her books it too bringshappiness and beauty to your life.

SUMMARY:Fall Art Series
DESCRIPTION:The YDC is excited to welcome young artists back for our Fall Art Series\, a free program designed to inspire creativity\, confidence\, and imagination in children ages 6–12. \nLed by Allee Coffman\, Lead Art Teacher and Shenandoah University student\, this eight-week series will introduce participants to the exciting world of abstract art. Unlike traditional art classes\, abstract art encourages children to think beyond rules and expectations. It gives them the freedom to explore\, experiment\, make creative choices\, and express themselves without worrying about creating the “perfect” piece. Along the way\, they’ll build confidence\, strengthen problem-solving skills\, and discover that creativity looks different for everyone. \nClasses will be held Saturdays from 10:00–11:00 AM\, beginning September 12\, at the YDC. \nThanks to the generosity of our donors\, this program is completely free for participating families. Registration is required\, and space is limited\, so we encourage families to reserve their child’s spot early. \nCome create\, imagine\, and discover the joy of making art in a fun\, welcoming environment!
