SUMMARY:Author Event: C. W. Armbrust - Cibola
DESCRIPTION:Set in the sixteenth century in a field in central Guatemala\, Franciscan friar Marcos de Niza is busy working with the local people\, teaching them efficient farming methods aimed at increasing production to cope with the rapidly growing population of New Spain. He also enjoys teaching the local villagers common languages used for trade with the Spanish settlers and the population throughout the New World. From Mexico City\, a thousand miles away\, the bishop has selected the friar\, drafting him into service on an expedition to explore the unknown regions far north of the subtropical region where he has served his mission so well. He is to join the expedition where he will explore new territories and encounter the people of Tierra Nueva. \nThrough unexpected events and turns of fortune\, the friar becomes the leader of a massive expedition commissioned by the viceroy of New Spain. His new mission was to seek out the riches of these new lands and establish contact with Indigenous people who had not been previously encountered. \nThe unsuspecting friar blazes a trail into history with his expedition that triggers a shift in the future of New Spain and the new land of Tierra Nueva\, eventually to become the lands of Mexico and the southwest US. \nThe friar has long since faded into the background of history\, despite being an influential figure in the transformation of Spain’s economic structure and paving the way for Francisco Vázquez de Coronado’s infamous mission to conquer the cities of Cibola\, which followed in his footsteps.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Alain J. Otárola - Life Among the Willows
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy (a signed copy of) this collection of vividly told stories about the author’s early years in the Chilean Andes. Each vignette captures the innocence\, humor\, cruelty\, and wonder that shaped the author’s childhood. Whether rooted in ordinary experiences\, such as going to the market with his mother\, seeing ghosts\, and hiking in the mountains\, or in extraordinary events\, such as a grandmother with an unusual profession or a brother kidnapped by the military dictatorship\, each story stands on its own while contributing to a larger meditation on childhood\, loss\, and memory.

SUMMARY:YDConnect
DESCRIPTION:YDConnect gives families a flexible after-school option while giving young people a place to learn\, recharge\, build friendships\, and stay engaged after the school day ends. \nDesigned for students in grades K-8\, YDConnect operates Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM beginning August 24. The program is drop-in friendly\, meaning registered participants may arrive and leave at any point during program hours based on their family’s schedule. \nEach afternoon is built around a mix of structured activities and opportunities for choice. Participants will have access to hands-on learning activities\, including homework support\, games and sports\, activities that strengthen social and emotional skills\, and student-led community service projects. \nOur goal is to create an environment where children can finish the school day with trusted adults\, meaningful activities\, opportunities to move and create\, and time to connect with their peers. \nFamilies may register by the day\, week\, or month\, making it easier to choose the option that works best for their schedule. A 15% sibling discount is available when registering more than one child by using code YDConnect at checkout. \nYDConnect has a maximum capacity of 40 participants per day. Upon registration\, a handbook will be emailed for review. Caregivers will need to complete and return the handbook\, prior to the student’s first day. \nFamilies are currently responsible for transportation to the YDC. Transportation options may be added as the program develops\, and families will receive updates as those opportunities become available. \nYDConnect follows the Winchester Public Schools calendar and will not operate on teacher workdays\, early-release days\, holidays\, snow days\, or other days when Winchester Public Schools are closed.
